ORIBE x THANDIWE MURIU

For our Holiday 2024 Collection, we partnered with Kenyan artist, Thandiwe Muriu, to present a bold expression of beauty through bespoke textiles, hand-crafted upcycled accessories, contemporary photography, and hair styled by talented Oribe hair artists.  
Muriu’s artistic vision—deeply rooted in her African heritage—embodies the jubilant spirit of community and togetherness, with this year’s artwork encapsulating the timeless African proverb:

“When your sister does your hair, you do not need a mirror.”

ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Muriu created two bespoke textile patterns for our collaboration that blend her artistic flair with iconic Oribe design elements. In the pattern, "A Cycle of Togetherness," featured on this gift set, the oval shapes symbolize the deep sense of community that both Oribe and Muriu share. “When I think about community, it’s an unbroken circle of love and support," she says. Muriu was also inspired by Oribe Canales’ “colorful character” and his collections of vintage hairbrushes and mirrors, incorporating references of spiky hairbrushes seen from above, as well as the tight coils, curls, and “O’s” of African hair.
